Yes, after taking on the Bullfrog publication as "guest editor" for the past few years I guess I have realized that I am no longer a guest but am the one and only editor. I have enjoyed my role in this publication, however, I would appreciate having a helper at times. Please let me know if you are interested. Club Cruise:
As dockmaster for the past 11 years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and greet many reciprocal boaters from yacht clubs on both sides of the lake. Many travel solo and others as an organized club cruise. My wife and I have traveled to most of the clubs on the lake, both north and south shores. It is a unique and enjoyable experience.
Three years ago, we organized a club cruise to Kingston, Ontario via Presquille Bay and the Bay of Quinte. We made stops in Trenton, Picton, and Kingston in Ontario and Fair Haven on the way back running the south shore. There were five power boats that made the trip. It was a great time.
| | | | We did not advertise this trip as it was a spur of the moment idea. Several boaters expressed an interest in joining us if we were to do this again in the future. Others have gotten together to arrange club cruises to Cobourg for the Canadian July 1st holiday. Again, this was word of mouth and was well attended. Both Sail and power participated.
I have been asked to organize another club cruise and have chosen the northwest end of Lake Ontario with multiple destinations (marinas and yacht clubs) over a period of approximately three weeks as an itinerary. See the destinations and dates below.
I understand that most boaters may not be able to join for all of the cruise but would like to participate in joining some of the cruise. I am setting this up so that those that may be interested can let me know which stops and dates they want to join. Unfortunately, since covid, marinas and clubs require reservations and reluctantly allow docking only if available, therefore I am going to try and reserve slips at each of the locations for 5 to 7 boats on the dates specified. If you are interested, please let me know and which segments you want to join. This is open to both sail and power.
- 6/30, 7/1 - Cobourg (40 miles from OOYC) Reservation by boat owner as deposit required.
- 7/2, 7/3 – Whitby (34 miles from Cobourg)
- 7/4, 7/5 - Frenchman’s Bay Yacht Club – (13 miles from Whitby)
- 7/6, 7/7 - Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club – (3 miles from FBYC)
- 7/8, 7/9 – National Yacht Club (10 miles from ABYC)
- 7/10, 7/11 – Mimico Cruising Club (4 miles from NYC)
- 7/12, 7/13 – Port Credit Yacht Club (5 miles from MCC)
- 7/14, 7/15 – Royal Hamilton Yacht Club (22 miles from PCYC)
- 7/16, 7/17 – New Port Yacht Club (8 miles from RHYC)
- 7/18, 7/19 – Port Dalhousie Yacht Club (19 miles from NPYC)
- 7/20 – OOYC (48 miles from PDYC)
I understand that the season hasn’t started but would like to get feedback as to interest in this cruise. You can let me know via email at larryt22@hotmail.com. Use “Club Cruise” as the subject. You can also call or text me at 561-846-2366. If I don’t pick up, leave a message. | Dock Repair/Rebuild Team:
This has been a winter that is reminiscent of winters years ago. Freezing cold, snow, ice on the creek. All point to the potential of having increased damage to the docks and more specifically the dock poles. I am looking for volunteers to be on a team to assist with the replacement of dock poles this coming spring and to also be available to do some minor repairs during the season if needed. I will also be relying on this team to assist with the rebuild of the main dock that will be started this coming season. The following are the benefits:
- Pay – None
- Health Care – None
- Profit Sharing – None
- Free coffee
- Title – Assistant Dockmaster Construction
- Lots of “atta boys” from the Board - Priceless
- Self-satisfaction of knowing that you’re helping keep OOYC a “working club”.
I will accept and approve applications from all who would like to be considered for this/these positions. Please call or email me (see above) to let me know.

OOYC Sailing School needs your help to spread the word!!!!
We are in need of a Head Instructor this summer for both youth and adult sailing lessons. There are active job postings on Facebook and Sail1Design, but they have not yielded any candidates so far.
Can you help us by spreading the word? The links to both postings are below.
This position would be ideal for an experienced sailor looking for a summer job, whether a college student, teacher, retiree, etc.
| | | Treasurer, Tim Quirk
As of 2/25/2025 Bank Balances are:
- Operating Account: $40,209.19
- Money Market: $14,784.11
- Youth Sailing: $7,104.89
All current bills are paid with some big insurance premiums due very soon, Chubb (marine liability, WC, Umbrella, and Custom RQ) $15,129.39. Federal Insurance Company (watercraft policy) $1,500 and, (Marine GL) $795.
| | | All Membership invoices have been emailed as well as snail mailed (USPS). They are due. Please pay yours if you have not yet. Thank you to all of those who have paid your membership dues. I personally appreciate it because it has made my job easier, and the club definitely benefits from prompt payment of invoices. If you need an additional copy of your invoice, please let me know and I will get it right out to you.
I am very excited to be in the role as treasurer and would like to thank everyone on the board for their assistance in my transition. A very special thanks goes out to Christine Zimmerman for answering all my ignorant questions and bailing me out when I have made mistakes in the club’s management software, Club Express.
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call/text me at 619-708-0397 or email me at treasurer@ooyc.org.

| | | Oak Orchard Yacht Club Restaurant & Bar Service returns in 2025 | Culinary Passion and Community: A Chef from Holley, Cortney Black.
It is my pleasure to introduce Cortney Black, Owner of Culinary Canvas and Riverside Retreat, a start-up restaurant business that has been a lifelong dream of hers to one day venture into.
Cortney has a vast background in the restaurant business and has been responsible for all aspects of restaurant operations including Head Chef, menu creation, staffing, and management. | | | Cortney envisions her restaurant as a hub where friends gather to enjoy culinary delights that not only tantalize the taste buds but also foster connections and friendships, ultimately enriching the local community through the joy of shared flavors and experiences.
With a focus on locally sourced ingredients and a commitment to fostering community ties, Cortney aims to create not just a dining experience, but a gathering space for members and friends.
Culinary passion serves as the foundation for a chef's career, driving creativity and innovation in the kitchen. For Cortney, this passion began in childhood, inspired by family traditions and local ingredients. The chef's commitment to mastering culinary techniques reflects a dedication to both personal growth and the art of cooking, which is essential for success in the competitive culinary landscape.
We look forward to seeing you at Riverside Retreat, where each dish tells a story, and every gathering strengthens the bonds within our community. As a result, Cortney hopes to create unforgettable experiences that celebrate not only flavor but also the shared moments that define the essence of community, making each visit memorable.
Good luck Cortney! | Cortney will be providing the club with amazing dishes under the restaurant name “Riverside Retreat” at our clubhouse on Friday and Saturday as well as providing food and bar on Thursdays during the racing season.
Opening day will be Friday, May 23rd at 5:00 PM. We will publish the season schedule along with the menu, special events and more details as soon as practical.

Marketing Team Embarks on Social Media Campaign
A small group of intrepid folks interested in social marketing have been working to experiment with and learn how to use social media, particularly Facebook.
First, we agreed to maintain two club Facebook pages – one public facing (Oak Orchard Yacht Club) that we will use to reach outside club members and friends, the other (Oak Orchard Yacht Club – Club Life) intended for intra-club communications – the more personal postings about individual member’s activities inside and outside the club.
| | | We decided we would create posts on the official business page and “boost” them – turning them into ads that show up on the FB pages of people outside our membership. I also looked into the on-line version of the Orleans Hub, which allows a similar sort of post-turned-ad that will enable us to reach over 10,000 people each edition.
While our primary objective is to generate interest in club membership, we also have an immediate need for a lead instructor for the sailing instruction program and agreed to boost a post to generate interest in that position.
As Marketing Director, I created a schedule of post topics and a budget for boosting. We will post a new message daily (REALLY) with the subject rotating through the week.
Sundays will feature our deep water docks;
Mondays, the restaurant/bar;
Tuesdays, social life at the T dock;
Wednesdays, the clubhouse and facilities;
Thursdays, racing;
Fridays, pickleball;
Saturdays, parties and special events.
Every post will also feature the special half-price offer for new members.
I will begin by creating text for each post of the week. The membership boosted posts will run for 27 weeks.
Yes, this is a lot of work. And I will need a LOT of help from the rest of the Marketing Team and from every member of the club – first to illustrate the texts that I create and over time to help create posts following the model and the schedule I create. If YOU can help, perhaps by signing up for one of the days/subjects, either for every week or even just for a few weeks, please contact me so I can get you on the schedule. It is critical for all of us to grow club membership, so it is equally critical for those who are able to help with this new membership marketing drive.

Need an incentive? We’ve got one for the summer of 2025! *See Below*
Prospective Members:
Have you had anyone in mind to recruit as a new club member? It’s a fantastic season for them to join! We have a very unique offer for our new docking members this summer. If we successfully fill our empty docks, we will likely not offer this again so listen up!
🚨Any new boating member for 2025 will receive 50% off their membership dues and 50% off their dock fees for their first year.
Also, the existing member that recruits that new member will receive $100 off their own membership!
🚨For new social member recruits. They will receive $100 off their new membership and you as a member will also receive $100 off your membership!
*All rebate checks will go out in August when the board’s duties and demands slow down a bit.*
Where is the limit on rebates? Well, once your membership is paid for, we’ll cut you off. I’d be thrilled if we had that “problem” Let’s go! 🎉
Member notes:
Thank you all who have promptly paid your club dues! Not only does it enable us to pay taxes and bills, but also allows us to plan and budget for the upcoming boating season. Thank you also for not hesitating to reach out when you have questions.
We want you to understand how very valuable and needed every one of you is to our club family. So many quietly volunteer their time to keep our club running smoothly and our grounds, docks, and clubhouse looking neat and tidy! There is no way a club of 200 people, large grounds with docks, multiple buildings, active sailing schools, bar, restaurant, full racing calendar, social calendar etc. can keep moving forward without your help. Please consider new ways you can get involved this summer. Need ideas? Ask us how!
We would like to announce our newest honorary members! We have had some members who have offered faithful, lifelong service and dedication to our club. This past month we have decided that both Kayleen Muscarella and John Pulver are worthy of this special designation. It is an honor to follow in the footsteps of those who have not only physically built our existing club but have set an example to all of us of faithful exemplary service and a model of how to build a real familial-like community! And a special thanks to both Christian and John Muscarella for stepping into the full membership level to continue the Muscarella legacy of club support and involvement! | | Leanne Hofmann

Our family has been very busy with the demands of sports and school, but I have been so pleased to hear my kids talk about sailing all winter long! I was also delighted to see that both my daughter, Leanne, and son Robert, when asked what they would like to choose for public speaking content, wanted to share about sailing and our club. Thank you all who have spent years investing and teaching my kids: in our sailing school programs but also on our Thursday night races and trophy races. Their knowledge and passion impressed their audiences! One of the judges from the Cooperative Extension staff noted that it’s very clear that Robert understands the subject. Neither of them needed cue cards! | My husband Karl, son Ethan, and I enjoyed the Toronto Boat Show in January with my in-laws Richard and Susan Sims. It was also especially neat seeing other club members there! We enjoyed the day with Carl & Lori Engle, El & Sue Roberts, and Jeff & Sheri Plummer. We’ll have to consider organizing a group trip to another boat show at some point. It was fun to meet up with our club friends in the off-season!

| | | Last, but not least, in case you missed the announcement: One of our existing honorary members, David Sturges, has passed. This was David’s obituary that was posted on the Orleans Hub: | David M. Sturges
HAMILTON – David M. Sturges, 92, of Hamilton, died peacefully at his home on Friday, January 24, 2025. Dave was born on January 25, 1932, in Albion, NY., a son of the late Francis and Lucy (Mack) Sturges. Dave graduated from Albion High School in 1950 and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1954. He then served as an officer in the US Navy aboard the USS Hazelwood (DD 531) from 1955 until 1958. | | | Following his time in the military, Dave received his MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of Business Finance at the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. In 1959, Dave married his first wife, Sarah Vinopal with whom he had his daughter, Nora Sturges. Also in 1959, Dave began his 30-year career with IBM where he would go on to hold several executive positions in the company, and that portion of his career took him to Japan for two years. His education continued after retiring early from IBM, and in 1994, he earned his PhD in Economics from Yale University. Dave worked for one year as a visiting assistant professor at Middlebury College, and in 1995 arrived in Hamilton where he became the Professor of Economics at Colgate University, a position he held until his retirement in 2011.
On April 19, 1997, Dave married Jana M. Laxa at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, New York. After retiring a second time, Dave continued to tutor adults preparing for GED mathematics exams and taught several adult education classes in economics well into his 80s, including classes at the Camp Georgetown Correctional Facility. In addition to a life of fruitful work, he enjoyed reading, cycling, walking, skiing, opera, symphony, lively discussions, traveling, and opening the doors of his and Jana’s lake house to loved ones.
Dave is survived by his wife, Jana; his daughter, Nora Sturges (Geoff Becker) of Baltimore, Maryland; David Vinopal of Boise, Idaho, and Jan Vinopal (Becky), also of Boise, Idaho; Edward (Mette Egstrand) Vinopal of Horsholm, Denmark; his grandchildren, Bruno Becker, Janny Vinopal, Mischa Vinopal, Calvin Vinopal, and Nola Patrick; and his 2 nieces, Linda Moore and Carol Petronio. He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Woodcook.
The burial service will be held at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Hamilton, New York at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mid-York Senior Homes at Madison Lane, the Hamilton Food Cupboard, and the St. Thomas’ Discretionary Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton, NY 13346. | Website Director, Carl Engle

Notes from the Commodore, Bob Hodgins
So here we are, covered in snow and ice. This January there was ice fishing going on right in front of my house on the river. Like the old days! But, it is starting to thaw and boating season is coming soon.
There is a lot going on at the club for this season. Last fall I chose not to put my name in for Commodore for a fifth year, but here I am again. No one volunteered.
| | |
Restaurant. This winter myself, Tom Pavone and Jeff Thuman took on the challenge of finding a service provider for the restaurant. When we finally did, we agreed that if we are going to have a restaurant, they will need one person to be their primary board contact. So, Jeff very generously offered to step up again as Vice, and I agreed to be Commodore for one more year. Everyone should very much appreciate the work and commitment that Jeff is willing to do again this year. Last fall we had a membership meeting that was very well attended to discuss the future of the restaurant. Donna Petrie moderated that meeting, and the board came away with a very clear mandate from the membership about what they want in a restaurant. I believe we are delivering that. So, it is very important the entire membership support it by showing up for dinner at least once a week when you are in town. If the restaurant is not supported this season, it could very well be the end of dining service at OOYC.
Sailing school. Our youth sailing school has had a successful run of 32 years. Last year we had very successful adult sailing lessons, which have proven to be effective for member recruiting. Now it is time for the program to take a next step in development. We are searching for a responsible, mature head instructor to take on the daily management of all the lessons. We have been advertising on Facebook. There have not been any good inquiries to date. It could be a great summer job for a schoolteacher. Please reach out to anyone you may know that could be interested. This is critical to the future of the programs.
Other potential projects at the club this year. There are several proposed projects that I feel are high on our list for improving the club. I list them here for thought and reflection. If anyone would like to take on a project, let’s talk. There is not really any money in our budget for these, but in recent years we have made many improvements to the club with member donations. If you are passionate about the club and want to work on one of these or are willing to provide some funds, let’s talk.
Pickleball courts. We have a proposal from last year that did not get done. Resurfacing the court into 3 dedicated pickleball courts. This is needed as the court renovation that I did 5 years ago is due again. And pickleball is the hottest thing going on right now. We have gained members because of the court, and I think it is the time to make it better.
Tree trimming. Now that we have secured a restaurant for the season, it would be a nice addition if we were to do a major tree trimming to open the river view that we used to enjoy from our dining patio.
Lower patio. There has been talk of improving our lower patio, the place where the picnic tables are on our lower level. It is a great outdoor space that is not too nice. Proposal to maybe paint, new furniture and seating. Make it attractive to be used for gatherings, similar to the T dock but upstairs.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the club soon.
| Senior Director, John Zimmerman
The long-time requirement for member work hours has been lifted effective this year. This decision was made based on the time it required to track work hours plus the belief it may have detracted from new members joining OOYC. Members have historically stepped up to help with the numerous things it takes to keep our club operating, many members volunteering well in excess of what was required.
In an effort to plan for volunteer help this year we are asking members to consider becoming involved in one or more areas of the club where help is needed. Below are listed just some of those areas.
| | |
If you have interests or particular skills
in one or more of these areas and are able to help please consider joining a work group. There will be opportunities to join work groups in the next month or two so more information will be coming.
In the meantime please feel free to contact John Zimmerman for more information
