Oak Orchard Yacht Club Youth Sailing Programs 2019

The Youth Sailing Program at the Oak Orchard Yacht Club in Waterport, NY aims to teach the fundamentals of sailing, including safety, terminology, boat handling, seamanship and introduction to racing tactics and rules.
The students will be introduced to these topics and taught to sail a boat with confidence, all while having FUN.

    Youth Sailing 2019
Classes are held at Oak Orchard Yacht Club, 1103 Archbald Road, Waterport, NY and on Oak Orchard Creek and Lake Ontario.

    Requirements 2019
Applicants must be nine years old by July 1 of the year they enroll, and be able to swim 100 yards while wearing their own Coast Guard approved life vest (PFD).
Students will be grouped according to ability for both classroom and on the water instruction.

    The Fleet
We maintain two fleets of instructional boats:

Optimist Dinghies - the most popular boat in the world, is a single sail, stable boat designed for use by children.
Club/Collegiate 420 - the 420 is a popular class boat raced at many of the colleges and universities on the east coast, it is designed to be sailed by a skipper and one crew.

The school also owns a newer boat, the Hunter 17 - The Hunter 17 Sloop - This boat can take up to 6 students, and is used as students gain in experience and when the water starts kicking up.
