    Oak Orchard Yacht Club Youth Sailing Programs 2018

    The Youth Sailing Program at the Oak Orchard Yacht Club in Waterport, NY aims to teach the fundamentals of sailing, including safety, terminology, boat handling, seamanship and introduction to racing tactics and rules.
    The students will be introduced to these topics and taught to sail a boat with confidence, all while having FUN.

    Youth Sailing 2018
    Classes are held at Oak Orchard Yacht Club, 1103 Archbald Road, Waterport, NY and on Oak Orchard Creek and Lake Ontario.

    Requirements 2018
    Applicants must be nine years old by July 1 of the year they enroll, and be able to swim 100 yards while wearing their own Coast Guard approved life vest (PFD).
    Students will be grouped according to ability for both classroom and on the water instruction.

    The Fleet
    We maintain two fleets of instructional boats:

    Optimist Dinghies - the most popular boat in the world, is a single sail, stable boat designed for use by children.
    Club/Collegiate 420 - the 420 is a popular class boat raced at many of the colleges and universities on the east coast, it is designed to be sailed by a skipper and one crew.

    The school also owns a newer boat, the Hunter 17 - The Hunter 17 Sloop - This boat can take up to 6 students, and is used as students gain in experience and when the water starts kicking up.

    The instructor/student ratio depends on the number and type of boats in the class, but will be no less than one instructor to ten students. All instructors are certified US Sailing instructors and maintain American Red Cross First Aid and Life Saving certification.

    Schedule:

    Each session is two weeks long, Monday thru Friday 9 AM until 4 PM.

    Session 1: July 9 to July 20, 2018
    Session 2: July 23 to August 3, 2018

    Oak Orchard Yacht Club Adult Sailing Programs 2018

    Oak Orchard Yacht Club is offering multiple sessions of Adult Sailing Lessons this summer ! Come out to Lake Ontario and really enjoy the Summer Saturdays on the Water. Big, small and in-between boats are available in our program for new sailors, intermediate, or simply wannabe sailors. Instruction emphasizes on-the-water training with limited classroom time.

    You’ll learn:

    How to rig a sailboat, and the important sailing knots.
    How to solo in a small sailboat with both mainsail & jib.
    Rules-of-the-Road, and other general safety skills.
    More advanced students will learn the basics of keel boat sailing, both as skipper and crew.

    Schedule:

    Two different sessions are available, commencing June 9th and concluding on August 25th.
    2018: The Adult Sailing Classes are moving to Saturday Mornings.
    Lessons begin at 9:30 AM and run until 12:30 PM.

  • Session 1: Saturdays June 9, 16, 23, and 30
  • Session 2: Saturdays August 4, 11, 18, and 25

    Raindates will be optionally scheduled should inclement weather force cancellations.
